Taiwan golden visa: what it is and who actually qualifies

Short answer: Taiwan has no program called a golden visa. What people usually find when they search for one is the Taiwan Employment Gold Card: a residence permit for professionals, granted for what you have done in your career, not for what you invest. If you heard about a "Taiwan golden visa" from a friend, a video or a search result, this is almost certainly the program. Here is what it is, how it differs from the golden visas of other countries, and who qualifies.

Why the name is confusing

In most countries, a golden visa is a residence permit you get in exchange for an investment: property, a fund, a company. Taiwan does something else. Its best known program is the Employment Gold Card, which has "gold" in the name but no investment requirement at all. You qualify with your salary history or your professional achievements. So someone who heard about "Taiwan's golden visa" often ends up reading about the Gold Card without knowing the difference.

What the Gold Card actually is

The official site describes it as one document that combines a visa, residence, work authorization and a re-entry permit. In practice it means:

  • You can live in Taiwan for up to 3 years on one card, and renew it.
  • You can work for any employer, several employers, or your own company. No sponsor is needed.
  • You do not have to live in Taiwan to keep it. Many holders use it as a second base or a backup.
  • Your spouse and children get residence with you. Since January 2026 a spouse can work without a separate sponsor.
  • After 3 years of residence you can apply for permanent residence. With NT$6 million a year or more in Taiwanese salary and professional practice income, after 1 year.

What it is not: a way to buy residence. There is no price you can pay instead of qualifying. The program checks what you have done in your career.

How that compares with a typical golden visa

Typical golden visa Taiwan Gold Card
How you qualifyYou invest or buy propertyYou prove salary or achievements
Money at stakeUsually hundreds of thousands of dollarsA government fee of about $180
Do you have to live thereOften a minimum number of days a yearNo minimum stay
Can you work locallyDepends on the country and the visa typeYes, for anyone, from day one
Path to permanent residenceUsually after 5 years or more3 years, or 1 year for high earners

If what you want from a golden visa is a residence you can keep in your pocket, bring your family on, and turn into permanent residence later, the Gold Card gives you that without the investment. The catch is that you have to qualify as a professional.

Who the Gold Card is for

Two kinds of people qualify. The first had a salary of about $5,000 a month or more, before tax, in any one of the last three years. Nine of the twelve fields have a salary route. The second has no such salary but has recognized achievements: a doctorate, an award, senior positions, a documented body of work. See every field and route on one page.

What does not count: income from property, dividends, crypto or bank balances. If your income is investment income, the Gold Card is usually not the route, and we say so when people ask. More on this in our guide for freelancers and business owners.

Other Taiwan visas that get mixed in with the Gold Card

  • Entrepreneur Visa. For founders who want to build a company in Taiwan. Issued for up to 2 years. You qualify through things like NT$2 million in funding from a recognized platform, backing from a venture fund, a place in an approved incubator, a patent, or a prize in a major startup competition.
  • Investment resident visa. For foreign investors and their representatives. The investment has to be at least US$200,000 in a business in Taiwan. It leads to residence, not straight to permanent residence.
  • Plum Blossom Card. A permanent residence card for large investors and senior specialists. We will cover it in its own article.
  • Digital Nomad Visa. A visitor permit for up to 2 years for remote workers from visa-exempt countries. It does not build toward permanent residence. We compared it with the Gold Card in a separate article.

What people ask us after searching for a golden visa

The people who come to us after searching for a golden visa tend to ask the same three questions.

Can I get permanent residence after the Gold Card?

Yes. The standard track is 3 years of residence in Taiwan averaging more than 183 days a year. Since 2026 there is also a 1 year track for holders with NT$6 million a year or more in Taiwanese salary and professional practice income. The full conditions are in our article on the 2026 rule changes.

Can I get a Taiwanese passport?

In principle, yes: naturalization is possible after five years of residence. As a rule, Taiwan asks you to give up your current citizenship first, and for most people that is not a trade they want to make. So the large majority of Gold Card holders stop at permanent residence and keep their own passport. There is an exception for people the government recognizes as high-level professionals, who can keep their original nationality, but it takes a recommendation from the relevant ministry and a separate review.

Can I move with my family?

Yes. Your spouse and children get dependent residence, and a spouse can work in Taiwan without a sponsor. Parents and grandparents can visit.
